SOURCE: Advance Monthly Retail Sales - May, 2004, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C.

Selected retail sales data extracted from U.S. Department of Commerce tables are reproduced here.

Convenience Store Definition (as classified by U.S. Commerce Department)
* Grocery stores including supermarkets, food stores, c-stores and delis are included in this classification if receipts from sales of groceries and food items are 50 percent or more of total sales

** C-stores deriving more than 50 percent of their sales from the sale of gasoline are classified as gas service stations.

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for May, adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $335.8 billion, an increase of 1.2 percent from the previous month and up 8.9 percent from May 2003. Total sales for the March through May 2004 period were up 8.4 percent from the same period a year ago. The March to April 2004 percent change was revised from –0.5 percent to –0.6 percent.

Grocery Store sales in May (which include c-stores - see Convenience Store Definition footnote above) were up 0.8 percent from the previous month (April, 2004) and increased 5.3 percent from May, 2003.

Sales of gasoline stations (which include c-stores that derive 50 percent or more of sales from gas revenues) were up 4.0 percent from April, 2004 but increased 22.5 percent from May, 2003.

Food services and drinking places sales for May, 2004 decreased 0.3 percent from April, 2004 but were up 7.8 percent from May, 2003 sales.

The advance estimates are based on a subsample of the Bureau's full retail and food services sample. A stratified random sampling method is used to select approximately 5,000 retail and food services firms whose sales are then weighted and benchmarked to represent the complete universe of over three million retail and food services firms. Responding firms account for approximately 65% of the MARTS dollar volume estimate.
